Best Hidden Gems of the wellington city

Introduction

Despite its small size, New Zealand’s capital city Wellington has no shortage of quirky and unusual things to see and do. From the city’s thriving café scene to the surrounding nature that you can access in a heartbeat, there is plenty to explore in this unique corner of the world. You just need to know where to look. As someone who was born and raised in Wellington, I spent my childhood exploring every nook and cranny of the area, so I know it well. Here are some of my favourite places that have remained under the radar for most tourists – until now!

Kelburn cable car

The Kelburn cable car is a fun and easy way to get to the top of the hill. It’s a great option for those who want something more scenic than walking but aren’t up for a hike. The ride itself is smooth and enjoyable, with views of Wellington city through the windows on either side of the cabin as you go up.

After disembarking at the top, there are plenty of options for what to do next—you can head straight into Kelburn Village or continue on towards Makara Peak and its lookout point (a popular spot for paragliders). If you're feeling more ambitious than usual one day, consider walking down from here as well!

Martinborough wine village

Martinborough is a great place to visit. It has a great atmosphere and the restaurants are amazing. There are also many wineries to visit and tour, which are all within walking distance from each other. This is one of my favourite places to go when I want to relax with friends or family because it's not as busy as some of the bigger cities but still has so much character.

Wairarapa countryside and wineries

If you’re looking for a day trip, Wairarapa is a great place to visit. There are several wineries and vineyards in the region that produce delicious wines, along with local cafes and restaurants to enjoy them at. The region also has its own shops selling locally made arts and crafts, as well as some tourist attractions like the Treaty of Waitangi Centre at Martinborough, which tells visitors about the history of the treaty signing, which took place there in 1840 (or 1840s if you prefer). And if you have time left over after all that sightseeing, there are many beaches nearby where you can relax on warm summer days!

Wrights hill fortress

Located in the Wellington suburb of Eastbourne, Wrights Hill Fortress is a defensive structure built on the summit of Wrights Hill in Wellington, New Zealand. It was built in the late 1880s as a defensive structure to protect the city from attack by sea and land. The hill itself is named after William Wright, who farmed there until he sold it to the government for use as a fortification site during the New Zealand land wars. During World War II, parts of it were converted into an air raid shelter that could hold up to 1,000 people and were used by locals during bombings between 1940 and 1942.

Rona Bay Cafe

If you're looking for a quiet spot to relax with friends and family, this is the perfect place for you. Rona Bay Cafe has a wide variety of food options, from Mexican to Italian and everything in between. It also has a great selection of desserts that you won't want to miss out on!

Whether you're stopping by during brunch or lunchtime, there's no doubt that this hidden gem will leave your taste buds satisfied. The atmosphere here is casual yet elegant, making it perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy their meal while still feeling comfortable enough not to dress up all fancy-like.

If there's one thing we'd recommend ordering at Rona Bay Cafe, it would definitely be the chicken parmesan - so good! Also highly recommended: the lasagna and tiramisu cake (although they do tend to sell out quickly).

The best times of year are autumn and winter because they offer special seasonal dishes like pumpkin pie pancakes during Thanksgiving time (which are AMAZING). You'll also get better deals when ordering certain items during these seasons as well!

The covy cafe and bar

The Covent Garden is a cafe and bar that has been around for a long time. It is popular with locals, who come in for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The menu includes all the usual options, such as eggs, bacon and burgers. There is also a large deck area where you can sit outside if you like to eat al fresco style!

The Covent Garden has a large beer garden which makes it very popular during the warmer months of summer. Additionally, there is plenty of parking available at this location, so no matter how busy it gets on any given day, there should be somewhere suitable nearby where drivers can park their cars safely without causing any problems for others nearby who may be trying to make last-minute preparations before heading out into town later on in evening hours.)

Newtown festival

Newtown festival is a celebration of culture and the arts. It is a free event that starts at 4pm and ends at 9 pm. Newtown festival is held on the streets of Wellington, where people can enjoy various activities such as live music performances, food stalls, art exhibitions and much more.

The first Newtown Festival was held in 2012 to showcase artists from around New Zealand who are passionate about music, dance, theatre or other forms of art forms.

Wellington waterfront

One of the best places to visit in Wellington is the waterfront. Located on the south coast, it's a great place to spend some time and enjoy yourself. You'll find all sorts of attractions, cafes and restaurants here, as well as attractions for kids and adults alike!
