Overview

Lake Brunner’s main township is Moana, which is situated at the northern end of the Lake. You can catch the TranzAlpine train, which stops at Moana and where passengers can disembark for a 2hr 40 minute stopover to enjoy either trout fishing, a lake cruise, visit the pottery, have some lunch or enjoy one of the many glorious strolls around the village. It might be best to stay a night or two to enjoy all this place has to offer. There is accommodation in the Lake Brunner area that will accommodate for all tastes and budgets, there is also a service centre for all your motoring needs, plus a grocery store, licensed café, and a wide range of land and water based activities. The surrounding rivers and streams, as well as the lake offer a number of the best brown trout fishing spots in the South Island. Fly fishing, trolling and spinning are available all year round on the lake and some rivers. Fishing guides, license’s, and tackle are available for hire locally. The area also features abundant bird life, a variety of wetland and rainforest ecosystems, and many walks for all levels of fitness from 10 minutes to 6 hours. Moana is 37 kilometres inland from Greymouth and serviced daily by both the TranzAlpine train and a daily shuttle bus service en route to Greymouth/Christchurch. The lake and township are easily accessible from either Arthur's Pass or Lewis Pass, making the area an ideal base camp for a unique West Coast holiday.
