Overview

The Cavalli Islands are found just North of New Zealand’s Bay of Islands. The Cavalli Islands consist of 6 islands, the larger being Motukawanui. Motukawanui is used as a nature reserve, leaving some of the smaller islands privately owned. Some of the outer islands are privately owned. The renowned Greenpeace vessel, Rainbow Warrior was scuttled close to the Cavalli Islands. The Rainbow Warrior is now used as a dive and fish sanctuary, many believe this to be a fitting end to the vessel. 70 Archaeological sites, including 14 pas, 36 pits and terrace developments were identified on Cavalli Island. The island is being developed as a sanctuary by The Department of Conservation, which has led to a re-vegetation programme. The endangered NZ Dotterel is established on the island, and the North Island Brown Kiwi’s breeding programme is a success.
