Recognised as a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, Barewood is a constantly evolving artwork of inspired plant and colour combinations.

Lovingly created by Carolyn and Joe Ferraby, Barewood is a large, semi-formal country garden that roams across three acres in the spectacular Awatere Valley, Marlborough. The garden began when Carolyn married Joe, a sheep and cattle farmer. Inspired by a quote from Gertrude Jekyll that “a garden should curtsy to the house”, Carolyn used her knowledge of floristry to design and create a lush, colourful fragrant landscape that would perfectly frame the 100-year-old homestead that is the heart of Barewood. Although challenged by the harsh climate and hard clay soil of the Awatere Valley, the garden has thrived on a steady diet of passion, enthusiasm and determination. Welcome and enjoy your visit.
