Based in New Zealand's hub of tourism, Rotorua, we manufacture top quality New Zealand souvenirs and corporate gifts and produce a large range of Maori woodcarvings, including masks, teko teko, weapons, wakahuia and 21st keys. Using New Zealand native timber, paua and greenstone, each piece is individually handcrafted to a high standard to satisfy the requirements and expectations of discerning souvenir buyers and collectors. Aotearoa Arts' carvings are hand-carved in our Rotorua premises. As befits top quality carvings, each piece is shaped and carved using a variety of New Zealand native timbers. We most commonly use Matai, but Totara, Kauri and Rimu are also used for certain pieces. Click here to view our online store.
Our carvers initially shape the timber to approximate dimensions, then each piece is individually hand-carved using a variety of authentic designs passed down through the generations, depicting tribal and family details. Once carving is completed, the piece is dipped in stain and sprayed with lacquer, to help preserve the timber. The final step in the process is to add paua eyes, greenstone, feathers and binding where necessary. Aotearoa Arts' carvers are trained through Maori carving institutions and have spent many hours perfecting the detail required to ensure that each piece is authentic and that each carving shows the history of Maoridom.
