Explore Wētā Workshop

Ask anyone who has vaguely heard of New Zealand, and they’ll usually know one of two things about it: the haka (courtesy of the All Blacks), or The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (courtesy of the brilliant director Peter Jackson).

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (among many other films) was filmed entirely in New Zealand, showcasing our breathtaking scenery and placing little-known places on the world stage.

The place that made that all happen?

Wētā Workshop.

Wētā Workshop is a special effects and film production company and studio based in the Coolest Little Capital in the World, Wellington. From star-studded films and TV series, to public and private art sculptures, to digital games, Wētā Workshop is the Holy Grail to any film aficionado.

With world-class artistic talents and innovative creators, visiting Wētā Workshop truly is an eye-opening, behind the scenes experience into the world of all things creative.

Tours

With Wētā Workshop’s tours and experiences, you can learn about the processes that go into making some of the biggest blockbuster films on the planet. With prices starting from $45, you can choose from a range of different tours to suit your wants and needs.

Combo Tour: This tour is the best of both worlds. Combining the two most popular tours (the Weta Cave Workshop Tour and the Miniature Effects Tour), you’ll learn how props, costumes, creatures, and more are created for your favourite films. From The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, to The Hobbit, to Avatar and more, this interactive and creative tour showcases what goes on behind the scenes in the workshop, as well as the filmmaking techniques of miniature effects.

Intro to Special Effects and Make-up: This tour is the perfect opportunity to release your inner ghoul and have a go at creating fake blood and wounds with silicone gel, special effects make-up and movie blood.

This 90-minute workshop is suitable for anyone over the age of 14, and for $69, is good bang for your buck.

Intro to Sculpting: This tour is great for those who love tangible, tactile activities - and want to have some fun.

Learn how to create fantastical 3D characters from modelling clay and household materials from a talented Wētā Workshop crew member.

Again, this tour is suitable for those over the age of 14 years.

Workshops

Tours aren’t the only reasons to visit Wētā Workshop - they also cater to budding artistes. Their Young Creatives’ Workshop is the perfect place for any child aged 10-14 who want to get lost in a world of creativity, refine their craftsmanship, and learn some of the magic of movie-making.

These school holiday activities are an unforgettable experience, so make sure you book well in advance to get a slot!

Weta Cave Retail & Transportation

You don’t have to go on a tour or participate in a workshop to visit Wētā Workshop. Their retail space on its own is a sight to behold! Be greeted by giant trolls, explore the mini museum, or watch a documentary on the history of Wētā Workshop.

If you’re driving there, be aware that there is no designated parking area for visitors. There is free parking on the street, but it is limited.

If you’re catching the bus, take the number 2, 24, or 18E from the CBD and ask the driver where exactly to get off - it will only be a few minutes walk from the workshop itself.
