Explore Auckland’s Sky Tower

The Sky Tower is an iconic landmark in Auckland.

Visible from virtually anywhere in the city, the Sky Tower is basically the Eiffel Tower to Auckland’s skyline - albeit a bit less well-known around the globe.

History

At 328m tall, the Sky Tower is a telecommunications and observation tower located in the city’s CBD, and is the largest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. During peak tourist times, attracting over 1000 visitors a day, the Sky Tower is one of Auckland’s most popular attractions, with adrenaline-pinching activities, sky high events, and fine dining with 360-degree views.

Originally opened on August 3rd, 1997, the Sky Tower took two years and nine months to construct. Receiving a New Zealand Institute of Architects award as well as regional awards, this impressive structure is also Auckland’s primary FM radio transmitter.
